CeDUR Synthetic Shakes are Built for Impact

The roof is one of the most essential parts of any home or structure because it protects the interior from nature’s harsh elements. If a roof is not durable, it can break or degrade under the stress of extreme weather, which can leave a home or structure prone to roof leaks and other serious structural issues. A Class 4 UL 2218 impact rated roof is durable and can help better protect a home from hail damage. CeDUR synthetic roofing shakes mimic the natural beauty of wood shakes with the added benefit of being Class 4 UL 2218 Impact Resistant. CeDUR synthetic shakes passed the Underwriters Laboratories UL 2218 impact test with a Class 4 Impact Resistance Rating. There are many benefits to choosing a Class 4 UL 2218 impact resistant roofing material. Let us examine the benefits of impact resistant roofing products for your home.

What is an impact resistant roof? Who tests impact resistance?

Impact resistant roofs are roofs that are engineered to withstand impact and withstand the potential impact of hail. Impact resistant roofs are made with durable materials that are resistant to weather and less likely to suffer severe damage during extreme weather events. Installing an impact resistant roof, and other impact resistant construction materials, is critical to protecting a home or structure from hail damage or weather damage. If a roofing product is impact resistant, it is designed and engineered to withstand harsh impact. It should be noted that no roof is completely “hail proof” because the speed and diameter size of natural hail impact is unpredictable.

To obtain an impact resistant classification, a roofing product must undergo rigorous testing. This testing is usually done by an independent organization known as the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) who works with the Institute of Business and Home Safety to create the UL 2218 impact classification that goes hand-in-hand with the Class rating system. The exact name of the test is the Underwriters Laboratories UL 2218 Impact Rating Test.

What are impact resistance ratings? What is the Class 4 UL 2218 impact resistance test?

Impact resistance ratings were created to identify and distinguish the ability of a material to resist high force. There are four impact resistance ratings from 1 to 4, with 4 being the most impact resistant. During testing, steel balls of different sizes are released onto roofing shingles (and other building materials) at 90 mph from heights ranging from 12 to 20 feet onto the same area.

For example, in the Class 4 impact resistance test, a 2-inch steel ball is dropped from a height of 20 feet on multiple surface points of a CeDUR shake. To achieve a Class 4 impact resistance rating, the material must withstand the impact test and not suffer damage. How the roofing material or building material holds up under the impact of steel balls will determine whether they will be classified as Class 4 UL 2218 impact resistant shingles or a lower class. For a UL Class 4 impact resistant rating to be achieved, the sample roofing material should be able to withstand two hits onto the same area by a steel ball that is two inches in diameter without cracking or showing signs of stress.

What class of impact resistance do you need?

When it comes to impact resistance, there is a class system used to identify the level of impact resistance that a product has. There are four classes of impact resistance ranging from Class 1, the least resistant, to Class 4, the most impact resistant. If a product is Class 4 Impact Rated it is more durable and impact resistant than a product that is Class 3 rated or Class 2 rated. Class 4 impact resistant roofing products offer the highest level of impact resistance and durability.

Each state in the United States of America has different building codes that may specify the class of impact resistant materials that a home or structure must use. What each state allows for roofing and other areas of construction will depend on the conditions the materials will be exposed to. For example, states prone to hailstorms are likely to require that roofed structures have Class 4 impact resistant roof shingles for optimal protection. States that experience hail more often like Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Kansas may require the use of more Class 4 Impact Resistant building materials. Different climates have different code requirements. Ensure the right products and installation methods are used per the building code official in your area.

Insurance Savings for Class 4 Impact Resistant Roofing

Natural wood shake shingles and other traditional roofing materials are potentially a high-risk liability for insurance companies covering residential dwellings. As a result, insurance companies may charge premiums for homeowners with a wood shake roof. Insurance companies are cautious of advising homeowners to install or re-repair their natural cedar shake roof, especially in high-risk wildfire danger zones due to durability concerns and fire risk associated with wood shake shingles. To replace a wood shake roof with a Class A Fire Rated and Class 4 Impact Rated roofing material like CeDUR, may alleviate insurance premiums. The installation of a new CeDUR synthetic roof means fire-resistance synthetic shake roof and potential reductions in homeowners insurance cost.

Due to our impact resistance and fire-resistant technology CeDUR is eligible for impact resistance discounts. CeDUR is listed on most major insurance companies’ premium credits product listing. This includes companies like State Farm Insurance, Chubb Insurance, and American Family Insurance. Homeowners with a CeDUR synthetic roof have the potential to receive insurance policy discounts.

With proper testing and certification, insurance companies are willing to provide homeowners with discounts for installing a Class 4 UL 2218 impact resistant roof.
