Fire Resistant CeDUR Synthetic Roofing Products

Your roof is the first line of defense against wildfires and a CeDUR synthetic roof is one of the most fire-resistant roofing products available for purchase. CeDUR synthetic shakes are Class A Fire Rated and no special fire-resistant underlayment is required during installation to achieve the Class A Fire Rated roofing system. In the event of a fire, CeDUR synthetic roofing shakes can extinguish flame spread and not allow a flame to propagate on the surface of the product.

CeDUR synthetic roofing products are fire-resistant and stand-alone Class A Fire Rated. Many alternative roofing products feature a Class A Fire Rating, but you must use a special fire-resistant underlayment system to achieve the Class A Fire Rating. The CeDUR roofing product itself is Class A Fire Rated - without the need of a special fire-resistant underlayment. Let us examine the fire-resistant benefits of CeDUR Synthetic Roofing Products and alternatives to fire retardant cedar shakes. Fire-Resistant CeDUR Synthetic Roofing Shakes

CeDUR Synthetic Roofing Products perfectly replicate the desirable wood shake look while providing extreme fire resistance. Natural cedar shakes ignite at around 375 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature on our CeDUR Class A certified burning brand test reached temperatures in excess of 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit and CeDUR shakes did not reach ignition.

In the event of a fire, CeDUR synthetic shakes can extinguish flame spread and do not allow a flame to propagate on the surface of the product. CeDUR synthetic roofing products are stand-alone Class A Fire Rated without the need of a special fire-resistant underlayment during installation. • Natural cedar shake roofs can be porous and soft and are known to retain moisture. Mold and mildew grow best in moist environments and a natural cedar shake roof requires routine maintenance to avoid mold and mildew build up. Once mold or mildew set in and additional moisture is retained, water damage, rot, and roof leaking can potentially occur. CeDUR synthetic shakes are resistant to rot, moss, water absorption and insects. The solid core of CeDUR polyurethane shakes provides installers with color stability and uniformity at valleys and cuts. The exposed cut end of CeDUR is resistant to water absorption.

Wood shakes are naturally flammable and untreated wood shakes can be ignited by firebrands, exposure to fire, or traveling embers from a nearby fire. Certain fire-resistant chemical treatments and preservatives are required to make a natural cedar shake roof fire resistant, but those chemicals can be harmful and have the potential to run off the shakes during severe weather events. CeDUR synthetic shakes are fire-resistant and stand-alone Class A Fire Rated (ASTM E108).

Natural cedar shake roofs provide thermal insulation properties. CeDUR roofs also provide insulation benefits and are rated at an insulation value of R > 2.0 R factor (approximately 20% greater than heavy wood shakes). If energy efficiency is important for you and your home environment, then CeDUR shakes are worth a look. The insulation properties of a CeDUR roof can help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

In terms of appearance, CeDUR synthetic shakes are molded from heavy hand split natural cedar shakes. Often it is difficult to distinguish the difference between natural cedar shakes and CeDUR synthetic shakes.

  • Most alternative synthetic roofing products are polyethylene based while CeDUR is polyurethane based. A polyurethane product composition allows CeDUR to replicate the appearance of heavy hand split cedar shakes while being extremely light weight, fire-resistant, durable, and aesthetically pleasing.

CeDUR is polyurethane based, so it does not have a cavity back or hollow back underside, instead each individual shake is solid from top to bottom and front to back. The color through pigmentation and solid product composition allows color to permeate all the way through the product instead of being applied to just the surface of the product. In terms of appearance, polyethylene-based products can have an unauthentic plastic sheen appearance, or a shiny plastic appearance in direct sunlight. CeDUR provides a more rustic wood shake look and natural cedar shake appearance.

Solid product composition can also mean better insulation for your home. CeDUR Synthetic Shakes are rated at an insulation value of R > 2.0 R factor (approximately 20% greater than natural heavy cedar shakes). The color through pigmentation means you can cut right through the CeDUR product with a utility knife. This helps ensure superior installation at a roof’s hips, valleys, gables, ridges, and eaves. The light weight solid product composition also makes the product easy for contractors to handle and install.

While polyethylene based synthetic roofing products can be Class A fire rated, they do require the installation of a special fire-resistant underlayment to achieve the Class A fire rating. The CeDUR product itself is stand-alone Class A fire rated without the requirement of a special fire-resistant underlayment during installation.

CeDUR installs just like natural cedar shake and does not require the need for costly structural modification or special reinforcement to the roof structure. CeDUR is Class 4 Impact Rated - UL 2218 impact rating - the highest rating available - and resistant to scratching, scuffing, and high impact. CeDUR is Class A Fire Rated - ASTM E108 - the highest rating available - without the need for a special fire-resistant underlayment.

Wood Shake Bans and Wildland Urban Interface Zones

Wood shake roofing bans are more common than ever before due to the high fire risk associated with wood shakes and the increasing rate of wildfires in the United States. When not treated properly and regularly, wood shake roofs can become a severe fire risk due to the inherent flammability risk in wood. CeDUR provides the same beautiful aesthetic appeal of hand split heavy wood shakes in a state-of-the-art polyurethane material that helps better protect your home against fire and wildfires.

Many mountain communities and homes in or near Wildland Urban Interface zones (WUI), have turned to CeDUR to provide residents and homeowners with an alternative to wood shakes because of the severe fire risk associated with wood. The Wildland Urban Interface is the zone of transition between land developed by humans and wilderness. In other words, it is an area where a human built environment mixes with a natural environment. These areas are automatically at greater risk of severe wildfire damage. There are several steps that homeowners and residents can take to mitigate their risk, and if you live in or near a WUI zone, it is important to be aware of and take precautionary steps to protect your home or property from wildfire damage.
